Matriark was founded by colleagues Anna Hammond and Joyce Huang, who became friends and then business partners devoted to changing the food system for the benefit of people and the environment.
All Matriark products are Upcycled Certified, meaning that they have an auditable supply chain that proves their positive environmental impact. Upcycling is about doing more with less, and elevating all food to its highest and best use.
“Upcycled foods save energy and nutrition from going to waste. They keep the energy, the water, the land and the labor used to grow food — fully in the food system — for the benefit of the environment and people,” says Anna Hammond, Matriark founder.

Matriark works with fresh-cut facilities to collect large quantities of vegetable trim previously destined for landfill. Their unique supply chain is a transformative road to mitigating climate change. Matriark gently sautes carrot, onion, and celery trim, and lightly enhances the mirepoix puree with light seasonings of porcini mushroom powder, nutritional yeast, tomato paste, and salt and pepper.
1 carton of Matriark Vegetable Broth Concentrate diverts .9 lbs of vegetables from landfills, saves 2.2 lbs of GHGS from the atmosphere, and saves 103 gallons of water from being wasted.
“Beyond creating delicious, climate-friendly products, Matriark’s ultimate goal is to accelerate a transformation of our food system,” says Hammond. “By working with Splendid Spoon, who’s using our ingredients in their delicious recipes, together we empower consumers to support a more resilient and efficient food system that addresses the climate crisis.”
