The Afia story doesn’t begin with a group of friends or a stroke of luck. It begins with adversity and uncertainty and the resilience to turn it all into something new. It begins with a tiny black book of traditional Mediterranean recipes, handed down through generations and narrowly escaping being lost forever.
“When the war broke out in Syria, my mother-in-law had hours to pack her life in a bag, so she packed her most sentimental items and personal belongings. One of those items was this black recipe book,” says Farrah Moussallati Sibai, Founder of Afia. “It’s filled with recipes handed down from generation to generation.”
Finding roots with her family in her new hometown of Austin, TX, Farrah wasn’t able to find the Mediterranean foods her family knew and loved at the local grocery stores, so the idea for Afia was born.
Afia is Arabic for well-being. “Before eating, you often hear ‘Saha wa Afia,’ which is a toast ‘to one’s health and well-being’ and a reminder to brighten up your table, and uplift those around it,” Sibai tells us.
Afia products are made from scratch at their female-owned and operated Austin, TX facility through the help of a community of refugees.
