This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of food, travel, and lifestyle writer, and Splendid Spoon Ambassador, Kimia Kalbasi.
Splendid Spoon: Hey Kimia! Tell us a bit about yourself.
KK: Hi! I’m a content creator based in SF. I specialize in food, travel, and lifestyle.
I’m constantly on the go and always try to nourish my body and mind as well as I can (which partly explains why I’m a total workout junkie!).
When I’m home, I love cooking for my family and friends — I find it very therapeutic and believe nothing brings people together the way food does. There’s something so special about gathering around a home-cooked meal.
SS: What’s your fav meal to make to bring people together?
KK: My all-time classic: grilled salmon, quinoa kale salad, and roasted sweet potatoes! Healthy and delicious :).
SS: How do you bring mindfulness to your eating habits?
KK: To me, mindfulness is presence intertwined with acceptance: a mindful practice is when I pay attention to my thoughts and feelings without judging them. When it comes to eating habits, this means I try to be conscious of what I put in my body. I choose my food carefully, and savor and enjoy everything I eat. As I eat, I focus on how I feel, and turn my gratitude inward to thank my body for the beautiful task of turning food into the energy that fuels me everyday.
SS: What are the 5 staples you can’t live without?
KK: Sweet potatoes, peanut butter, dark chocolate, kettle corn, and blueberries!
SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
KK: Mint chocolate coconut water from Nooma. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream, but mint chocolate chip flavored coconut water is a whole new ball game!
SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
KK: For sweet, mint chocolate chip ice cream (yes, I’m obsessed). Savory would be my mom’s home-cooked Persian food, no questions asked.
SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
KK: Perfect bars. I could live off those babies!
SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
KK: Definitely In-N-Out. It brings back memories of road trips with family and friends and late night food runs. Also, I worked there for 2 years, so it gives me all kinds of feels :).
