Beauty is holistic: it’s the energy that glows within us, and the energy we put out into the world. It’s what we put in our body and on it.
To enhance our beauty energy, we need to release what no longer serves us. We habitually add items, activities, beliefs, and routines to our lives until they’re overflowing. Releasing something brings us more space, more freedom, and more energy. We’ve spoken with our Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of our favorite wellness gurus — to discover what they’re releasing.
This week, New York-based registered dietitian Eliza Savage, shares what she’s letting go, and why.
The Physical
What physical item are you throwing away?
I tend to go on crazy Marie Kondo-esque throw-out splurges. What I throw out tends to be old clothes, make-up, and bathroom products, as well as all the random “stuff” that accumulates in our apartment.
Recently, I decided to get rid of all skincare and hair products that aren’t made from natural or organic ingredients. The skin is the body’s largest organ so it’s important to watch what you put on it! It’s scary to think of all the chemicals that we unknowingly put on our skin, or are exposed to, every day. As a nutritionist, I always recommend whole foods that promote beauty from the inside out. A properly nourished body will glow without any make-up!
I’m so thankful that Splendid Spoon introduced me to the organic skincare company, Cocokind. Their chia oil is now my go-to for dehydrated skin. I also love Tata Harper and Juice Beauty products. I’m starting this process with skincare and hair products, and will eventually address make-up!
The Expectation
What expectation are you letting go?
I’m letting go of the need to wash my hair daily. As a morning workout lover, my hair tends to get sweaty (especially around my temples) every day. For a long time, I washed my hair almost every morning with hair products that were full of chemicals and stripping the life out of my locks! I put my hair through the ringer with Brazilian blowouts, straighteners, and curling wands for years.
I’m now finding that a little bit of sweat is okay, and it doesn’t mean my hair is dirty. If needed, sometimes I’ll rinse with water, skip the shampoo, and go straight for the conditioner. Other days I just wear my hair up!
I’ve noticed that my hair has become stronger, more vibrant, and has adjusted to being washed 3 times per week. I make sure I eat plenty of protein, fibrous fruits and veggies, and healthy fats to keep it shiny and healthy. I try to start each morning with a homemade smoothie filled with fat, fiber and protein. The new Splendid Spoon smoothies are perfect for that as well — just defrost, grab & go!
The Habit
What long-lasting habit or movement are you stopping?
Coffee before water. It has to stop! I’ve gone back and forth on the caffeine train, and have found that 1–2 cups per day is fine for me. However, I’ve formed a bad habit in the past few months…I get home from a run and reach for a cup of coffee before a glass of water. I then have to play catch up later in the morning when I feel dehydrated.
Hydration is key to keeping your skin and body vibrant and glowing. Did you know that proper hydration can increase metabolism up to 30%? I aim for (and recommend to all my clients) a minimum of 2 liters of water per day.
The Visual
What image or picture makes you feel beautiful, and why?
I got married last February, and I’ve never felt more beautiful and radiant than I did on that special day. My smile has never been wider, my heart has never been so full of joy, and I’ve never had so much fun with family and friends.
My husband and I got married at the same location as my older sister, and before I left for the ceremony, I wanted to take the same picture she had taken in this gorgeous window. It was a quick moment with the photographer and my dad, but I look at this and think of the excitement I felt of seeing my best friend at the end of the aisle, and how happy and comfortable I was in my skin! For me, this picture is a true example of holistic beauty — inside and out.
