From the day Splendid Spoon was founded in 2013, we’ve aimed to make it easier to get your daily dose of whole vegetables. Six years later, we’re still making sure you never miss out on your greens (and reds and oranges and purples). Our founder, Nicole, weighs in on why we’re moving away from a word we’ve used a lot in the past.
Hey, Spoon Crew!
You may have noticed that we are no longer using the word cleanse. I have been wrestling with this terminology since I wrote my book, Soup Cleanse Cookbook, over two years ago. Back then, I thought we had an opportunity to re-define the word, and pull it back from the extreme juicing and dieting cultures. I wanted to show people that a day of eating wholesome, plant-based meals can be really great for you, and that it doesn’t have to be extreme. Unfortunately, “cleanse” still connotes a sense of extreme dieting which is the opposite of our philosophy at Splendid Spoon.
Starting this January, we are calling Splendid’s full day of souping a reset. The word reset implies a return to a place of balance, which I do believe in. The definition of healthy includes enjoying birthday cake and champagne, and it also means that at a certain point we opt for veggies instead of chicken wings. Healthy can be both of these things, and the occasional reset can help us get there.
We don’t believe in restricting ourselves, but we do believe in making real, wholesome meals just as easy as the not-so-great stuff. Taking time to reset is not about weight or how your body looks. It’s about letting us guide you through the day so you don’t have to negotiate between granola bars and takeout. It’s about improving your relationship with food so that you feel proud of what you are putting in your body. It’s about how food can make you feel really great, no matter how busy you get.
Busy can be healthy, and we’re here to help.
