Kim Rose, RDN, shares why she recommends our newest Wellness Shot addition, The Digestion Shot.

I don’t know about you, but I'm always looking for a way to metaphorically “take the bull by the horns” when it comes to my health and wellness. Because I’m a busy professional who is always on the go, it’s tempting for me to not make my health a priority. However, as a registered dietitian, I know the fact of the matter is, flu season (not to mention COVID-19) is here. So I am 100% invested in consuming foods that are nutrient dense and have some kind of health benefit. This is because everything we consume has to pass through our digestive tract and a large part of our immune system is housed in the gut. In other words, what we eat has a direct effect on our gut health, which contributes to the state of our immune system, and consequently, our ability to fight off infection.

Digestive Health

Digestive health is important because it sets the stage for the health of the entire body. When you eat a lot of sugary and processed foods, this can cause inflammation in the digestive lining, and throw your entire body off balance. When this happens the body is likely to rebel, and as a result you could begin to feel sluggish or show a change in stool frequency and elimination. For this reason, among others, I am a firm believer in whole food nutrition.

So you can only imagine how excited I was to try Splendid Spoon’s Digestion Shot with Apple Cider Vinegar & Turmeric. When I saw it was made from a short list of natural ingredients including apple juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger juice, turmeric, and pepper, I knew it would do my body good. And after tasting it, I felt refreshed by its tangy-sweet flavor along with its hint of spice! From a dietitian's perspective, taking this digestive shot is a wise decision.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar is naturally free of sodium so it is suitable for anyone on a sodium restricted diet. Furthermore, apple cider vinegar can aid in digestion, especially for people who experience gas and bloating.

Ginger Juice

Well-known and widely used, ginger is believed to reduce motion sickness and protect against cancer of the colon and rectum. Also, ginger root that is rich in antioxidants and is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a common spice that contains curcumin which also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Even though unprocessed turmeric root is better for digestion than when taken in supplement form, the bioavailability of turmeric is low. So pairing turmeric with pepper is a great way to increase its bioavailability. Simply put, this combination yields more of the anti-inflammatory health benefits.

Pepper

Pepper, or 'the hot stuff', as I like to call it, not only adds an interesting kick to your plate, but it helps to decrease inflammation. Research suggests that capsaicin, an active ingredient in pepper,  is not only an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, but may also have anticancer and anti-obesity properties.

Can you drink one of Splendid Spoon's Digestion Shots every day? Can you drink more than one per day?

Think of this digestive shot as an addition to a meal. It is made from whole food ingredients that can be consumed on a daily basis, and is even suitable for ingestion during pregnancy. So drinking one shot a day is a good habit to develop, even for those without digestive issues. If you need two shots a day, then that's okay as well. But remember, it's good to use moderation in everything. That being said, cheers to good health and a good gut!
