Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of plants, but you better believe there’s a whole lot of variety, and a bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;).
This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of dancer, yogi, writer, and creator, Sarah Schwab.
Splendid Spoon: Hey Sarah! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Sarah Schwab: Based in Madison, Wisconsin, I spend my mornings and afternoons dancing, writing, and creating recipe, self love, and wellness content on my Instagram and blog. In the afternoons and evenings, I am youth counselor, working with students of all ages at a community center. I love having so many interests to keep me busy throughout the day! I am super passionate about holistic health, plant-based living, and spreading positivity wherever I can!
SS: What are the 5 kitchen staples you can’t live without?
Sarah: My top 5 would be:
- Non-dairy milk. I have never been a fan of dairy-based milk, but I can drink nut milk straight from the carton. I have recently found macadamia nut milk and am IN LOVE.
- Kale. Although I’m not a fan of raw kale, sautéing up some kale is my favorite quick and easy snack. Add a little bit of olive oil and salt and you’re good to go! Yum!
- Spinach. Great for salads (add strawberries and raspberry vinaigrette for the perfect combo) and adding to smoothies, spinach is neutral enough to incorporate into just about anything!
- Hummus. I LOVE hummus. Great with fresh veggies or some crackers — it’s my go-to snack.
- Sweet potatoes. I make sweet potato fries weekly. So easy and tasty, you can’t go wrong!
SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
Sarah: An herbal “cold fighting” shot. With horseradish, ginger, turmeric, and lemon, it’s not for the faint hearted but it will kick even the toughest cold out in 24 hours flat.
SS: What meal helps you stay grounded during the holiday season?Sarah: My go-to dish is a veggie medley containing carrots, sweet potatoes, red potatoes, red onions, and chickpeas. Seasoned with tons of rosemary, it’s hearty and warming.
SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
Sarah: I have SUCH a sweet tooth so it’s hard to pick just one sweet — but I’d have to go with ice cream. Coconut and cashew-based ice creams are my favorite and there are so many flavors to choose from at the grocery store now, so there’s something for everyone! As for savory, potatoes are the hands-down winner. So versatile, you can turn a plain old potato into so many different dishes! When I was little, I used to pick potatoes with my dad and uncle at a family farm, so spuds have a soft spot in my heart. :)
SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
Sarah: I’d have to say a strawberry. Sweet and small, but not without a few tough seeds. :)
SS: What food do you turn to when you need a mental and physical reset?
Sarah: Soups. Hydrating and nutrient-rich, soups provide the nutrition my body needs with the comfort my soul craves. Splendid Spoon soups are a go-to for me when I need a break from everything. Skip the prep and enjoy a plant based, hearty soup. An absolute must!
SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
Sarah: Mac n’ Cheese! I’m still working on perfecting a creamy homemade vegan mac n’ cheese, but Annie’s Gluten Free Vegan Mac is really great substitute for the time being! Brings me right back to my childhood.
