Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of plants, but you better believe there’s a whole lot of variety, and a little bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;).
This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of conscious living blogger, Rhian HY.
Splendid Spoon: Hey Rhian! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Rhian: Hello! I’m British and live in northern Michigan with my husband and three dogs. I love all things healthy eating. I run a vegan and cruelty-free lifestyle channel, which covers everything from beauty to mental health.
SS: What are the 5 staples you can’t live without?
Rhian:
1. Rice cakes, because they’re a great base for anything from chocolate spread to avocado to a lazy microwave pizza (just add non-dairy cheese and ketchup/sriracha — you’re welcome).
2. Avocados, because avo is life.
3. Non-dairy milks for tea, coffee, and cooking.
4. Berries for a healthy snack and boost of energy.
5. Hot sauce because it goes with everything and I might be obsessed.
SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
Rhian: Probably sheet masks or my jade roller. I love throwing on a cold sheet mask when I’m feeling puffy or want to feel extra pampered.
SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
Rhian: My favorite sweet has to be sea salt cocomels: I’m a salt-fiend and love a good mix of sweet and salty. My favorite savory is either sauerkraut (hi, probiotics!) or salt and vinegar chips cooked in avocado oil.
SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
Rhian: I had a hard time answering this; I couldn’t decide between trusty milk or energizing hot sauce. So, I decided to phone-a-friend (thank you Tashina!) and she was convinced I’d be milk because it’s adaptable. Non-dairy, of course.
SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
Rhian: When I want a taste of home I’ll make a yummy shepherd’s pie like my mum used to cook! I love using lentils, veggie protein, mushrooms, carrots, and peas. I throw all of that into gravy and top it with potatoes. Wow. Comfort on a plate.
