Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of plants, but you better believe there’s a whole lot of variety, and a little bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;).
This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of wellness and fitness fanatic, Michelle Biro.
Splendid Spoon: Hey Michelle! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Michelle: Hi Splendid! I’m 26 years old and live in Baltimore, MD with my husband and pup. As I write I’m — excitingly — six months pregnant! The contents of my fridge has changed drastically over the last six months thanks to the ups and downs of morning sickness.
I’m a wellness and fitness lover. I’m still working out seven times a week doing anything from boxing to running to hiking. I also teach Pilates and barre five times a week. Regardless of what’s going on in my life, when I eat well and move my body, I feel alive and ready for next the adventure.
SS: What are the 5 staples you can’t live without?
MB: My body has needed something new with each month of pregnancy (20 straight weeks of morning sickness will cause you to get creative!), but here are my current staples:
- Tea. Either a weak green or black tea, or a caffeine-free option. Lately I’ve been adding a small dash of milk to my English Breakfast tea: I tried this when I visited London, and I love it!
- Whole grain carbs. Whether it’s a freshly made whole grain baguette or protein pasta, my body craves healthy carbs. I always feel better after eating them!
- Apples. It’s the season for pick your own apples at our local orchards, and I’m taking full advantage! Plus, I’ve heard that an apple a day keeps the swelling at bay, so I’m indulging daily :).
- Spinach. Fresh, crisp spinach was a staple prior to my pregnancy, and still is now. A fresh spinach and kale salad is my favorite lunch. I also love to throw it in my breakfast or dinner to add some extra iron.
- Dark chocolate. Sometimes you need to treat yourself, whether it’s with homemade sweet potato brownies (get the recipe here!) or a piece of dark chocolate, this mama-to-be needs to indulge!
SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
MB: That’s tough — I don’t have anything too out of the ordinary! The strangest thing to most people would be the five jars of kimchi, pickled veggies, and sauerkraut with pickles — however I know this community doesn’t think that’s strange! Pickled veggies are so good for you and help with morning sickness!
SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
MB: Sweet is chocolate cake or cookies…really anything chocolate :). Savory is air fried french fries.
SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
MB: Definitely the six containers of prepped salads and yogurts. I’m an overly organized person who plans everything: my meal prep represents that!
SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
MB: Soup! [We promise we didn’t ask her to say that! — Ed.] It’s comforting and reminds me of my mom’s cooking. When the weather turns cold, I immediately start making soups, whether it’s vegetable, chicken noodle, or my current favorite, pumpkin chili. I love how food connects us to past experiences, relationships, and memories.
