Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of plants, but you better believe there’s a whole lot of variety, and a bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;).
This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of chef, entertaining expert, and entrepreneur, Sarah Ashley Schiear.
Splendid Spoon: Hey Sarah! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Sarah Ashley Schiear: I’m the founder of Salt House, a lifestyle brand and online shop celebrating creativity and mindful living. We produce a weekly YouTube show, sharing content on everyday creative pursuits like cooking, home decorating, and art practices of all kinds. I believe creativity is healing, therapeutic, and one of our greatest sources of joy, so it’s my mission to help people tap into that.
SS: What are the 5 kitchen staples you can’t live without?
SAS: Good olive oil, flaky sea salt, lemons, eggs, grass-fed butter.
SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
SAS: It’s not necessarily weird but maybe unique, I have a jar of preserved lemons. I like to make these each winter when lemons are at their peak, it’s a fun process to make them and I love adding them to a variety of dishes.
SS: What meal helps you stay grounded during the holiday season?
SAS: Splendid Spoon Red Lentil Dal! I love keeping these in my freezer for quick, healthy meals whenever I need them. This spicy lentil soup is my current fave for the winter. So hearty, grounding, and delicious.
SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
SAS: For sweet, dark chocolate with sea salt, because even sweets need a little bit of salt, and for savory it would probably be steak frites. Or french fries with mayo (but it has to be good, homemade mayo), that’s my guilty pleasure.
SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
SAS: Grass-fed Greek yogurt — it’s healthy and at the same time luxurious, plus it adapts to improve many different things!
SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
SAS: Sometimes I wake up and I just need to bake a cake. There’s something in the creative process that feeds me. And for savory foods, I love a good braise like short ribs, or chicken pot pie.
